The boneyard is a large chamber, 55 feet east-west and 105 feet north-south originally serving as the final resting place to Lhessadrak's wife in life the Paladin of Everlasting Light. In the early years before Lhessadrak became a foul undead being, he tried to honor her by placing the bones and remains of dragons and giants slain by the other Paladins of Everlasting Light, during the lich's tenure as a living cleric of that faith.
While Lhessadrak still grieves for that terrible loss, he has learned to take less notice as he passes this chamber towards the inner sanctum of his fortress.
The boneyard features spontaneously created skeleltal undead from the many bones scattered about the chamber, sometimes manifesting as whole skeletal giants, dragons and other humanoids, even animal skeletal monsters.
Once the chosen PC enters the Masoleum which contains the final resting place for Vara, Lhessadrak's paladin wife when he was alive and still the good cleric, Lhessander. Her ghostly form rises from the great stone sarcophagus.
The Ghost Paladin, Lady Vara seems to recognize the chosen PC as her descendant though she passed over a century before the PC was born, "Come child," she beckons "you must be told your lineage. You are of my line, just as you are of my husband's, the one you call Lhessadrak. He is your great, great, great grand father."
"Before my husband fell from grace, he was a good man who protected the faith, as much as I had. He died inside, when I passed. He even left his wedding ring inside this sarcophagus - my final resting place. Open the lid and look upon my breast. You will find the ring. Wear it on a chain about you and I will protect you from his wrath.
"You must then travel north through his foul cold rooms to the north and through the portal - though the latter I can not protect you from the vile means of activating, but you must pass through the portal to complete your quest..."
With that final utterance, her ghostly form fades away.
